Also called *dōgu-datami 道具畳, or kyo-datami 居畳. The straw mat tatami 畳 upon which the host sits when he prepares tea in a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. The placement of the host's mat is governed by the proximity to his entrance *sadōguchi 茶道口, and to the sunken hearth *ro 炉.

Temae-datami is interchangeable with the term dōgu-datami, meaning a mat on which the host's tea utensils are placed. The use of the word temae-datami or dōgu-datami is a matter of personal preference. In either case, the temae-datami can be full size or smaller *daime-datami 台目畳.
