Tea Houses

Also written 茶堂口, 茶頭口; also chatateguchi 茶立口, or *katteguchi 勝手口. The host's entrance to the tea ceremony room when he is to perform the tea ceremony. The host usually passes from the preparation area or kitchen *mizuya 水屋, and enters the tea ceremony room through the sadōguchi. There is either a step-in mat *fumikomi datami 踏込畳, or the host's mat called either *temae datami 点前畳 or *dōgu datami 道具畳, placed immediately in front of the entrance. The standard dimensions of the sadōguchi in a rustic tearoom *sōan 草庵 are about 1.6 m high by 60 cm wide with a post at one side. Sadōguchi can be found in either of two basic styles: a plastered *katōguchi 火灯口 with an arched top, or *hōdateguchi 方立口 which has a small post on one side and lintel above. These entrances can be closed by a sliding door completely covered with white paper, *taikobari fusuma 太鼓張襖. The doorway sometimes contains double sliding doors, in which case it is called *kayoiguchi 通い口. See *kyūjiguchi 給仕口. Example: Hanshō'an 半床庵, Kyoto and Jo'an 如庵, Aichi Prefecture.
