Also called kakutamagaki 角玉垣 or *tatehigo tamagaki 竪籤玉垣. A variation of a *tamagaki 玉垣 type fence. A fence with square laths set vertically between the main fence posts. Thought to have first appeared in the late 16th century, it may also have a small roof to protect it from the rain. If the laths are placed diagonally, the fence is called sujikaigōshi tamagaki 筋違格子玉垣 and if the laths form a grid pattern, the fence is called ōgōshi tamagaki 大格子玉垣.
