Lit. surplice shape water basins. A stone wash basin *chōzubachi 手水鉢, made from part of a stone pagoda *hōtō 宝塔, the design of which is suggestive of a priest's surplice *kesa 袈裟 (see *mitatemono chōzubachi 見立物手水鉢). The basin is made from the cylindrical body *tōshin 塔身, of the pagoda, thus the striped priest's robe pattern kesadasuki 袈裟欅, engraved on the body becomes the distinctive feature of the basin. One variety of kesagata is the roketsu type, roketsugata chōzubachi 露結形手水鉢, which has the Chinese characters ro 露 (dew) and ketsu 結 (together) written on the front side of it. This is said to be the invention of Kobori Enshū 小掘遠州 (1579-1647) who employed a roketsu kesagata chōzubachi 露結袈裟形手水鉢 in the shoin garden *shoinniwa 書院庭 at Daitokuji Kohōan 大徳寺孤篷庵 in Kyoto.
