Refers to the appearance or exposed surface of an architectural structural element. Also a smoothly planed wooden finish as opposed to a rough one. It is applied to a painting or engraving, or any other member which is decorated with a smooth wooden finish. The word keshō is used as a prefix indicating a decorative or exposed feature, for example ornamental roof sheathing *keshō ura-ita 化粧裏板; and ornamental lath *keshō komai 化粧小舞.
