Ch: juetou dingmiao. A brush technique used to create the clothing of figures in an ink painting. The brush strokes are initially thick and pronounced and then diminish in width in a jerky and staccato fashion resembling the shape of a nail. A worn out brush is often used to achieve this effect. Ma Yuan (Jp: Ba En 馬遠; fl. ca. 1190-1264) and Xia Gui (Jp: Ka Kei 夏珪; fl. early 13th century), painters of the Southern Song academy, are known for works in this manner.
