mayu 眉

1　A carved molding *kurigata 繰形, found on the lower edges of rainbow beams *kōryō 虹梁, bargeboards *hafu 破風, and eaves' supports *kayaoi 茅負. There are several types, and named according to the shape of the carved cross-section. These include; the shallow arc-shaped *nagimayu 薙眉, the 'L' shaped *kakimayu 欠眉, the arc-shaped *yumimayu 弓眉, *sutemayu 捨眉, and sword-shaped *kenmayu 剣眉. The action of cutting the moldings is called mayu-wo-kaku 眉を欠く or *mayukaki 眉欠き.

2　Carvings attached to eaves' support from the 13th century onward. A vestige of a period when the eaves's support and the eaves filler *uragō 裏甲, were created from one timber.
