Lit. "yellow lead monoxide," PbO. Made by heating lead. Used as a yellow pigment in early Japanese painting, for example on murals in the Hōryūji *Kondō 法隆寺金堂, Nara. Mixed with vegetable oil and heated, mitsudasō was used as a pigment binder *baizai 媒剤 for traditional Japanese oil painting yuga 油画, or as a varnish over mineral paints *iwa-enogu 岩絵具 based in animal glue.
