Also bukemado 武家窓, bugyōmado 奉行窓. Edo period windows with heavy vertical lattice bars, used in castle architecture, residences of samurai 侍, officials, magistrates, and retainers, and on the front facades of tenements, exterior walls of tenement gates and some storehouses. Also found on vernacular houses *minka 民家, where these windows are called kurashikimado 倉敷窓 or *mushikomado 虫籠窓. The lattice is usually covered with thick white fire-proof plaster on castles, but often left exposed in dwellings. Always wider than their height, mushamado had their lower sill at waist height or above. A similar window with horizontal lattice is called *yorikimado 与力窓.
