1 The board used as the base of the *daisu 台子, a stand used to display the utensils necessary to perform a tea ceremony. Sometimes called ji-ita 地板.
2 Tea ceremony display boards. A board of about 85 cm x 36 cm x 2 cm supports the portable brazier *furo 風炉, during a tea ceremony. If all the utensils are displayed on it after the ceremony, the practice is called sōkazari 総荘. If only the kettle *kama 釜, the furo and the water jar *mizusashi 水指, are placed on it, it is called futatsuoki 二つ置. If only the kettle itself is displayed, it is called hitotsuoki 一つ置. A smaller naga-ita, 73 cm x 30 cm x 1.2 cm, is positioned beside or near the fixed hearth *ro 炉. Its purpose is to display the water jar, waste-water jar *kensui 建水, the ladle stand *shakutate 杓立, a ladle *hishaku 柄杓, tongs *hibashi 火箸, and lid stand *futaoki 蓋置. The boards are made of paulownia and with a thin coat of lacquer so that the grain is enhanced, shin-nuri 真塗. When thin mulberry wood is used the grain is enhanced, kakiawase-nuri 掻合せ塗, with blue or red lacquer, tame-nuri 溜塗.
