A pictorial subject based on "Nowaki" ("The Typhoon"), Chapter 28 of Genji monogatari 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). One autumn evening a storm hits Genji's Rokujō 六条 mansion (see *Otome 乙女), and does considerable damage to the buildings and gardens. Because Genji is away, his son *Yūgiri 夕霧 inquires after Murasaki no Ue 紫の上, his father's principal wife, and catches a glimpse of her for the first time through an open door. Much of the chapter concerns Genji inquiring after each of his ladies at Rokujō, either through or with Yūgiri, to discover what damage they have suffered from the storm. Scenes chosen for illustration include: Yūgiri, acting as his father's deputy, visiting Empress Akikonomu (Akikonomu no Chūgū 秋好中宮) when her little serving-maids are laying out insect cages in the damp grass of her garden; and Yūgiri secretly witnessing a rather compromising scene between his father and *Tamakazura 玉鬘.
