A roofed corridor or passageway that connects one structure to another. It may also encompass an open area. There are several kinds of  named according to function, construction and style: *kairō 回廊 (a single or double passageway); *horō 歩廊 (a corridor); sukirō 透廊 (a passageway open on both sides); watarō 渡廊 (a connection corridor), *chūmonrō 中門廊 (a middle gate corridor); *hashirō 橋廊 (a bridge causeway); and *yōkurō 翼廊 (wing corridors). This last type extends out from the *Chūdō 中堂 at Byōdōin *Hōōdō 平等院鳳凰堂 (1053) in Kyoto.
