shuzumi 朱墨

Also shuboku, akazumi 赤墨. Red ink. Black carbon ink *sumi 墨, mixed with cinnabar red pigment *shu 朱. Sometimes a red pigment powder such as mercury sulphide *shinsha 辰砂, is mixed with animal glue *nikawa 膠, and hardened to make a stick of red ink. Used to paint outlines of figures in Buddhist painting butsuga 仏画, and figure painting jinbutsuga人物画.
