Bamboo rafters that span from the ridge *munagi 棟木 to the eave ends *nokisaki 軒先 over bamboo purlins called *yanakadake 屋中竹. These purlins are about 10 cm in diameter and are placed 36 cm apart. Either ditch reed or bamboo sudake 簀竹 about 9 cm in diameter are laid over the rafters. This creates a sturdy base on which to pile the thatch.
