1  A generic term for the vertical muntins on lattice *kōshi 格子, found on sliding translucent paper screens *shōji 障子. Vertical muntins on fences are also called kakiko 垣子, and are frequently made of bamboo. Whole bamboo muntins are used in a grid shape for *yotsumegaki 四目垣, and kinkakujigaki 金閣寺垣, while split bamboo muntins are used for *kenninjigaki 建仁寺垣. Other vegetation is sometimes gathered into bundles and used as muntins. Examples include spice bush which is used for *uguisugaki 鴬垣 and bush wood which is used for *shibagaki 柴垣.

2 Lit. "standing members." The longitudinal or upright slats of a fence. These vertical members are usually tied to horizontal bars *oshibuchi 押縁 with cord. In some cases, they are affixed to a bottom sill, either with nails or on a sill, and to the top bars *tamabuchi 玉縁. Bamboo is the favorite material, but other types of light wood may be employed.
