A pivot-hinged door. *To 戸 refers to sliding doors. However, in a compound word such as *karado 唐戸 or *hirakido 開戸, both of which are hinged, to is used. Pivot-hinged doors can be classified according to structural style: single panel; several planks joined together *itakarado 板唐戸; or a paneled door set in a frame *sangarado 桟唐戸. Tobira can also be categorized by the way they open: single panel door swinging either inward or outward *katabiraki 片開; doors that swing in both directions *ryōbiraki 両開. Folding doors are called moroori ryōbiraki 両折両開, with each door having one fold, hence, two leaves. A door with two folds and three sections is called *mitsuori ryōbiraki 三折両開.
