The entrance of a shrine or temple building in one of the gable ends *tsuma 妻, constructed in such a way as to have the axis of the approach parallel to the ridge *mune 棟 of the roof *yane 屋根. The complementary opposite to tsumairi is *hirairi 平入, where an entry is built in one of the sides of the building, and the axis of approach is at a right angle to the roof ridge. In vernacular houses *minka 民家, hirairi are more commonly used than tsumairi.
