A generic name for various types of roofing boards including *noji-ita 野地板, sheathing on which shingles are laid, such as *kokera-ita 柿板, thin shingles 3 mm thick, 20-40 cm long and at about 9 cm wide. Tokusa-ita 木賊板 are shingles that are thicker than kokera-ita, with a thickness from 4.5-6 mm, length from 33-36 cm, and width of 10.2-10.5 cm, but thinner than tochi-ita 栩板, with a thickness of 0.9-3 cm, length within 60 cm long, and from 9-15 cm wide.
When large boards are used, they are called ō-ita 大板. The shingles are usually made of cedar sugi 杉, but when needing a better quality, sawara 椹 (cedar) is used. It is similar to hinoki 檜 (Japanese cypress) but has no fragrance. Hiba 檜葉 (white cedar) is also preferred, but hinoki is considered the best quality wood.
