An alcove room *tokonoma 床の間, usually 91 to 95 cm square, equal to the size of the half mat, hanjō 半畳, used in a 4 1/2 mat *yojōhan 四畳半, tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. It is almost always adjacent to the host's mat *temaedatami 点前畳. Between the alcove post *tokobashira 床柱, and the wall post nearest the host's mat, a partial wall is constructed reaching just below the halfway point between floor and ceiling. This wall may be solid or contain a *shitajimado 下地窓, a window filled with bamboo laths and twisted vine. Most masudoko have a wooden floor that is level with the matting *tatami 畳, and called *fumikomidoko 踏込床 (step-in-style alcove). Some masudoko have a tatami mat *tatamidoko 畳床, and others have a wooden base higher than the tatami, *itadoko 板床. The term masudoko is derived from the square shape of the alcove which resembles a square measuring box called *masu 斗. Example: Daitokuji Jukō'in Masudoko-no-seki 大徳寺聚光院枡床席, Kyoto.
