A placement of the firebox or hearth inside the guest's mat which results in a smaller than normal size tatami mat *daime datami 台目畳, in a 3-mat tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. The upper corner of the firebox is close to or may touch the middle post *nakabashira 中柱, which is erected about one-quarter length from the narrow end of the host's mat *temae datami 点前畳. While this style is common in 3-mat tea ceremony rooms, its use is not limited to that size room. The normal position *hongatte 本勝手 and reverse position *gyakugatte 逆勝手 are also utilized. Examples: Kan'in-no-Seki 閑隠の席, Daitokuji Jukōin 大徳寺聚光院 in Kyoto, normal type; *Kihakuken 既白軒, Myōshinji Keishun'in 妙心寺桂春院 in Kyoto, normal type; Enjuan 延寿庵, Kōfukuji 興福寺 in Nara (moved to private garden in 1936), reverse type.
