A tearoom with a decorative alcove *tokonoma 床の間 placed behind the host's mat *temae datami 点前畳. The alcove in this position is called *gezadoko 下座床. The front of the alcove is in line with the host's entrance *sadōguchi 茶道口, and the alcove faces the crawl-in entrance *nijiriguchi 躙口. The opposite arrangement, called jōzadoko-no-seki 上座床の席, has the tokonoma on the same side as the stove *ro 炉, in line with the rear edge of the stove.
