Also written 蒸子格子. A type of lattice *kōshi 格子 used on windows particularly on the street facades of vernacular residences in towns *machiya 町家, and to provide light and air to upper-floor rooms and lofts *zushi 辻子 (also called tsushi). The vertical timber bars were wrapped in straw rope, nawa 縄, to provide a key and then plastered. The term mushiko depending on the way it is written, refers either to an insect cage, pronounced mushiko or mushikago 虫籠, with its closely spaced bars of bamboo, or to the bamboo grating in the base of a rice steamer, seirō 蒸籠. The term is meant to emphasise the close spacing of the bars. A grill of mushikogōshi might extend across the bulk of the tsushi facade, or it might be confined more limited window openings called *mushikomado 虫籠窓.
