shikii 敷居

Also formerly called shikimi 閾; also called shiki 敷, shikiri しきり or shikige しきげ. A threshold.

1　A long square timber laid between the pillars *hashira 柱 of a gate *mon 門. If this timber is removable, it is called *kehanashi 蹴放.

2　Shikii or shikimi also refer to an obsolete shoe-scraping block or stone *kutsuzuri 沓摺, set in front of the entrance to a gate or dwelling.

3　A threshold with grooves for sliding doors, opaque sliding screens *fusuma 襖 or a translucent sliding screen *shōji 障子.

4　Sashishikii or sashijikii 指敷居. Also written 挿敷居 or 差敷居. A threshold connected by a tenon *hozo ほぞ and *hozoana ほぞ穴, of a type called hozosashi ほぞ差, to the uprights of a door framework. The tenons extend out from each end of the threshold so that they can be inserted into the uprights on each side. This type of threshold is higher than a regular threshold and is used with a very large head jamb sashikamoi 指鴨居 (see *kamoi 鴨居).
