General Terms
A generic term for backing boards, which are boards nailed over rafters to form a backing for the roofing. In an open roof *keshō yaneura 化粧屋根裏, the boards are called *keshō ura-ita 化粧裏板 or yaneura-ita 屋根裏板 because they are visible. Boards used in a hidden roof *noyane 野屋根 are called noura-ita 野裏板.
Ura-ita are used as a backing for latticework *kitsune gōshi 狐格子, or on the back of a latticed door *shitomido 蔀戸, and on the back of short, curved non-supporting struts *shirin 支輪. The boards that are nailed to the back surfaces of a coffer to form a coffered ceiling are also called ura-ita, as are the backing boards on fence stakes.
